The PhD candidate will work with CEI-UPM researchers in the area of Internet of Things and Digital Embedded Systems.
This PhD will be part of the KYKLOS 4.0 project (An Advanced Circular and Agile Manufacturing Ecosystem based on rapid reconfigurable manufacturing process and individualized consumer preferences) in H2020. KYKLOS 4.0 aims at providing an Ecosystem which creates and supports the configurations, methodologies, production techniques, decisions and actions at all different levels and stages of the equipment manufacturing value chain so as to achieve the goals of: i) increased energy efficiency, ii) decrease of raw material through to the second use of parts or material (including waste from manufacturing process), iii) customer centricity, iv) on-demand manufacturing and best meet the Industry 4.0 objectives of operational excellence.
In circular manufacturing (CM), manufacturers find ways to eliminate waste by reusing and recycling materials and goods. The EU-funded KYKLOS 4.0 project aims to show how cyber-physical systems, product life-cycle management, life-cycle assessment, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence technologies and methods are able to transform CM. It will achieve this through seven large-scale pilot projects that will demonstrate improvements in operational efficiency and deliver solutions for resource reuse. It will further ensure the scalability of novel CM technologies, engage over 100 European industry actors, transfer know-how and mobilise additional sector investments. The project’s advanced ecosystem can reshape factory processes and services so as to benefit manufacturing throughout Europe.
OBJECTIVES: One of the main goals of the above-described European project is to perform large-scale pilots to demonstrate the technical, environmental, and economic viability of KYKLOS 4.0 Ecosystem to reshape intra-factory processes and services. In this context, the specification and implementation of IoT gateways and Edge-to-Cloud technologies are to be performed to integrate the shop floor hardware platforms with both the factory and cloud level. To this end, in this offer new middleware capabilities and interoperable communication technologies based on open standard protocols are to be explored, supporting seamless integration among heterogeneous edge sensing and CPS networked platforms deployed on the shop floor. Moreover, Computation Offloading strategies between the IoT Edge and Cloud abstraction layers are going to be investigated.

- Strong programming skills (C/Python recommended)

- Basic knowledge of WSN and IoT technologies

Contract, annual gross salary amounting to 18.200 €, in 12 monthly pays.
